Pioneer Foodservice has been awarded five stars – the top rating for food hygiene - for its Carlisle butchery, food hall and Fisher Street shop by Carlisle City Council.
Environmental health officers give a star rating based on how well businesses perform in terms of hygiene, structural condition and overall attitude to complying with the law.
“We have done extremely well to get both premises a five star rating,” said retail manager Dougie Middlemass.“For both premises it shows that our procedures are strong. The rating is made after a three hour inspection by an environmental health officer".
At the Fisher Street butchers shop, which employs 10 people, the front of house sales area, preparation area, store room and staff facilities were all inspected. At the Rosehill food hall which employs a further 20 people, the inspection took in the in-store bakery and butchers as well as the retail areas. The council introduced the Scores on the Doors scheme along with other authorities in Cumbria in January 2007. The scores are published on the city council’s website.
